How Northern Ireland’s spirit of enterprise is pioneering the future of travel | Invest in Northern Ireland
27/02/2023
Whether by land, sea or air, Invest Northern Ireland explains how the region’s businesses are shaping a greener, smarter world of transportation.
With more than half the world’s population living in and around urban centres, transport – including logistics – is one, if not the biggest challenge for cities.
Northern Ireland companies are pioneering the much-needed green transport technology to help cities – including Belfast – become more sustainable having created the world’s most efficient double-deck, battery-electric bus, the most advanced zero-emission foiling fast ferry on the planet and revolutionary lightweight wings for next generation aircraft. Here are some of the ways that Northern Ireland companies are helping to revolutionise transport.
Introducing the UK and Ireland’s first smart harbour
In a UK and Ireland first, BT and Belfast Harbour have built a state-of-the-art 5G ecosystem to accelerate digital transformation and support Belfast Harbour’s ambitions to become a world leading regional smart port. Belfast Harbour is a significant contributor to the regional economy. Every year, more than 1.75 million people and over half a million freight vehicles arrive and depart through the port, while 24 million tonnes of goods are managed and carried by ferries, container ships and general cargo vessels.
The 5G private network delivers ultrafast mobile connectivity, coverage, reliability and security across the port’s main operational areas to capture, process and interpret data in real time giving insights to speed decision-making, better manage vehicle traffic, improve productivity across operations and services and enhance safety. The partnership is also exploring how 5G and other emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT) and connected autonomous vehicles, can be used together to enhance public safety, physical security and address climate change across the port and wider region.
Spotlight: smart seacraft
Artemis Technologies’ zero-emission vessels are the greenest workboats – and soon to be passenger ferries – on the planet. A partnership with Condor Ferries to operate a pilot scheme using the first EF-24 Passenger 150-person capacity ferry ‘Zero’, launching in 2024 will run between Belfast and Bangor in Northern Ireland. Fuel savings of up to 85 per cent will be £2.6m compared with a conventional high-speed diesel ferry.
